Paulo Pires, was born in 1928 in Franca, interior city of São Paulo. At the age of ten he won from his father his first camera and since then he continued trying diverse techniques, but always as self-taught.
In 1947 he graduated as mechanical technician and then he started to teach technician design. He was passionate about inventing and creating optical equipment and laboratory devices. In 1950, for the first time, he exhibited in the IX Salão Internacional de Arte Fotográfica from the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirantes, his first photo club. In 1959 he gathered a group of amateur photographers in São Carlos and founded the Iris Foto Grupo, a group that remains in activity. Since 1967 he has the title of Artiste Fiap (AFIAP) from the Fédération Internationale de L'Art Photographique, based in Bern, for his works and photographic technique domain. He participated in diverse photography salons around Brazil and the world in the decades of 1950 up to 1980. In 2004, it was published a collection of his works: "Paulo Pires: Fotografia”.
His photographs are included in the Instituto Cultural Itaú, TATE Modern of London, MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MoMA - The Museum of Modern Art
